Symptom: Rattle noise generated in rear of drive snout. Clicky noise that will disappear on supercharger speed increase, but is prominent when idling, holding speed, or decelerating.
Cause: Undersized drive bushings from IHI, combined with rubbing chaffing action that wears the drive pins and bushings and amplifies the noise over time. Problem can be confirmed by a bushing that pulls from the pocket or drive pins that are worn with rusty dust or wear.
Correction: Oversized drive bushings. Can be installed at any time, even on new. If you follow this procedure, and replace the following items, you should permanently solve the rattle issue caused by worn or undersized bushings.
Parts: We recommend replacing the drive pins and bushings, even if there is light wear.
These instructions start with the assumption that the supercharger is already removed from the vehicle. Please note that some steps may require special tools and jigs, not available to the public, and may require a customer to make their own tooling on a lathe or mill.
Installation instructions.
Please take time to do it right and do not skip a step. If you skip a step, you could cause damage to your supercharger.
Remove drive snout. Remove bolt on rear hub of drive. Extract rear hub off drive snout. Remove 8 pins. Replace with 8 new stainless pins from Jon Bond Performance https://jonbondperformance.com/product/pin-g5-b-ihi-hellcat/ Beveled edge is installed first into hub. Reinstall hub. Support center of factory pulley only, when installing with press. Install new bolt. https://jonbondperformance.com/product/bolt-cent-13-d3/
Remove rear gear case cover. Oil will drain from supercharger, so have a container to collect it off the edge of the bench. Remove gasket. Clean rear cover, brake clean area, clean all magnets.
Extract black bushings from supercharger drive hub by using and oversized threaded screw. Screw into the bushing part way and pull with a pair of pliers. Clean supercharger drive hub of all rust and debris and rear areas with brake clean and blow dry. Tape up entrance area with black duct tape like Gorilla tape.
JB Performance bushings are self clearancing and require a light press fit to install. https://jonbondperformance.com/product/ihi-hellcat-drive-bushing/ Support supercharger in press, with the rear drive gear properly supported near the center. This is REQUIRED. Do not support near toothed area to avoid potential damage. Push bushings squarely into supercharger drive coupler till seated flat with surface. Installation will shave some slight material off the bushing sides during installation. This is normal. After the 8 bushings have been installed, take a size A drill bit or boring bar, and gun drill the 8 bushings out. Be sure to hold the drill squarely, to avoid cross-drilling any bushings. Blow all the debris out of the area. Remove tape.
Use a ceramic or silicone grease and lightly coat the 8 drive pins. This provides better corrosion control and decreases abrasion. If you have a 2.4L, you MUST use a gasket https://jonbondperformance.com/product/ihi-gask-hellcat-drive/. If you have a 2.7L, use anerobic gasket maker. https://jonbondperformance.com/product/gasket-518/. Reinstall and torque the drive snout bolts to 16 ft/lbs.
Replace the rear gear case gasket https://jonbondperformance.com/product/ihi-hellcat-gear-case-gasket/ and tighten bolts to 16 ft/lbs. Check rotation of the supercharger before placing into service.
